LLINFO.TXT - DETAILS OF LEASED LINE SERVICES
Last updated 23rd May 1994.
The latest version of this document is available from
ftp.demon.co.uk:/pub/doc/Llinfo.txt
Thank you for asking to see our Leased Line information pack.
You have possibly heard of Demon Internet with respect to our
low cost single host connectivity service which has attracted
thousands of subscribers since June 1992. When we became an
independent Internet Provider in June 1993 we started to offer
our own networked services including Reserved Line Dial-Up and
Leased Lines.
We are now in a position to offer much cheaper Leased Line
connectivity combined with superior bandwidth availability
hence our special offer on our 64K service (please see the
price list for details).
We have our own network of lines connecting our many Points of
Presence throughout the UK as well as lines and peering
arrangements with the other major UK commercial providers.
This includes a direct line to the Department of Computing,
Imperial College the most major archive in Europe and a
separate line to the JANET/JIPS UK academic network.
Please read through the enclosed information and call us if we
can help clarify anything. You are most welcome to make an
appointment to come to the Finchley Network Operations Centre
to discuss your requirements, see how we work and have a
demonstration of the Internet.
The Service...
==============
Put your entire network of computers on the Internet using
a 14.4K or 64K Leased line connection to the PoP (Point of
Presence) of your choice. Use an existing Class B or C
Internet Address or ask us to arrange address(es) for you
- see Internet Addresses below. Use an existing Mail
Domain or ask us to register one for you - see Electronic
Mail below. Take some or all of our enormous Usenet news
feed - see Usenet News below.
...You Require

help register these on your behalf. We have a block
of Class C addresses from which we can allocate under
the supernetting agreement.

reference to well-documented procedures and further
reading
Other Internet Protocols
Mail (SMTP), News (NNTP), Time (NTP), WWW (HTTP) etc.
- advice on the wide range of Internet Protocols you
could and should be implementing
If you buy a router from us, we will:
Configure the router before despatch or configure the
router remotely for you.
Unless stated otherwise, the above support is carried it
out via the telephone or via your leased line (once it is
up!). See Support for details of our ongoing support
service.
If you need more help we can arrange for one of our
technicians to visit you to carry out any services and
training you require. This would be charged separately to
the above.
Electronic Mail
===============
You may use your existing domain or we can allocate a new one
for you. If you wish to use an existing domain, we will ask
for the mail exchange records to be delegated to you as soon
as you are ready. If you wish to set up a new domain, we can
deal with the administration on your behalf. Domain names can
be of any (reasonable) length and a general guide is that the
should reflect the company name or services in some way. Very
short names (3 or less characters) are normally only
registered in exceptional circumstances. Some domains and
comments:
.co.uk Company, United Kingdom. Applications are put to
the Naming Committee, on which we sit, and if not
opposed within 5 working days, the name is
delegated. The whole process should therefore
take a maximum of 10 working days.
.com Commercial. No geographic location is implied by
it and lots of UK companies use a .com mail
address. A form has to be filled out (by us) and
submitted to the Internic. We require some simple
details from you including an administrative
contact and a short description of your business.
The Internic are currently taking 3- 4 weeks to
process applications.
.org For organisations rather than private companies.
Details as per .com
.org.uk Description as per .org and the allocation process
will be the same as .co.uk as from 1st July 1994
.ac.uk Reserved for UK academic institutions
.gov.uk Reserved for the UK Government
Usenet News
===========
Usenet is the set of machines that exchange articles tagged
with one or more universally recognised labels, called
newsgroups (or "groups" for short). The articles consist of
discussions and files on a vast array of topics. It is the
biggest bulletin board with an estimated 20,000,000 readers at
80,000 sites world-wide.
We collect all the newsgroups we can, currently over 9,000,
and run an open news server (news.demon.co.uk) which you can
use to pull news from, post to or read directly from. Thus
you can build your own local news base and perhaps run some
private newsgroups. Or you can use a news reader to
interrogate our news base and read on-line.
Support
=======
Support for our leased line customers is available during
the working day via a special ex-directory number which
will be given to you when you send in an order for a
leased line. This will give you access directly to senior
technical staff.
We have an emergency pager which is available 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week, for urgent support to leased line
customers only. You will be given a special code so that
you may page us at anytime and expect a technician to
contact you. There are always at least two senior
technicians with pagers at all times to ensure a rapid
response.
About Us
========
The Demon Internet NOC (Network Operating Centre) based in
Finchley, North London, has its own private international
leased line to the United States, lines to other network
providers for excellent UK coverage, a high speed
connection (planned) into JIPS (the UK Academic IP
Network), a line to the Department of Computing Imperial
College providing access to their extensive archive
facilities and lines to our PoPs (Points of Presence).
There is an 071 PoP for Central London as the leased line
costs for connections made within the 071 area are
considerably cheaper.
Demon Internet are full members of the CIX, the Commercial
Internet Exchange, and so offer full commercial
connectivity to their associated networks including:
AlterNet, ANSnet, CERFnet, Eunet, JANET/JIPS, NSFnet,
PSInet and SprintNet. We have our own domains (demon.net
and demon.co.uk), a Class B internet network and
autonomous system number. Our service has enjoyed
availability in excess of 99.5% since its introduction on
1st June 1992. The service is run on a selection of Sun
and Apricot UNIX boxes - all running TCP/IP of course.
Our Usenet news feed takes all of the groups offered to it
and news flows in at the rate of about 80Mb per day. We
currently store at least the last 10 days of all groups.
No service or part service may be sold or passed on, incl
uding within your own organisation, without the written
consent of Demon Internet Ltd. All payments are due to
Demon Internet Ltd in advance of using any service. All
prices exclude vat.
The map on our WWW server shows the topography of the
Demon Internet network.
